What sounds like an oxymoron – window well beauty – actually is achievable. Basement window wells serve a function which is to keep soils away from excavated windows in home foundations. The most commonly used type is made of corrugated metal. The second most common is concrete. Window or area wells keep getting larger to meet egress safety laws in many states. These large-sized wells enable people to escape from basements and firefighters to enter them.
These large openings at ground level pose hazards on the outside of homes. Children and animals can fall into them and become trapped or injured. Getting a wild animal out of a well can be an unwanted challenge. Skunk tango, anyone?
You can spend money on a wildlife specialist to get a trapped critter out. You can spend money on medical care or on a lawsuit if a person falls in. Or, you can spend money on a custom or stock cover. I know which way I’d rather spend my money.
You’re fortunate if you have one or more window wells because it means you have a basement that you can use for extra living space or for storage. It also means you have a way to bring natural daylight into your basement.
The other drawback to these wells is how ugly they are. You can take care of that by decorating them with scenic liners you purchase or by some other decorative method you devise. The most commercially-available liner product is called Window Well Scenes.
