Come and Be Healed in Wells, England's Smallest Town
Although Wells is England’s smallest city, some would argue that it is one of the most beautiful. It is nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills among beautiful countryside. It is named after natural water springs which were found in the market place and also near the Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace. This natural water, found so near to the Cathedral was thought to have spiritual significance and healing powers, and Wells has been a central location for many visitors ever since.
Set in fourteen acres of luxurious land and gardens, the Bishop’s Palace is home to the Bishop of Bath and Wells since the thirteenth century. The imposing buildings stand tall among the grounds and are surrounded by an ancient moat. The several buildings date from many different periods in history. There are mute swans in the moat. These have been trained to ring a bell by pulling a string when they want food.
Wells Cathedral is a striking Gothic structure. It is also home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells, and is thought to date back to the tenth century. The west face of the Cathedral contains over three hundred intricately carved statues of saints and holy figures. And the Wells Cathedral clock is known to have a twenty-four hour astronomical clock. Every quarter of an hour, a scene of jousting knights appears much to the delight of the crowds.
Wells is a good central location for the visitor who wishes to see the surrounding attractions. Some of these include Stonehenge, which is the pre-historic monument of large, circular standing stones. Also the town of Bath and the Somerset coastal beaches are within easy reach.
Another nearby attraction is Wookey hole cave. This is a much-visited attraction made from the action of water on the limestone hills over centuries. There is a great deal to see in this beautiful and picturesque town and surrounding areas and all types of visitors, from the spiritual, nature lovers, to the family friendly holiday makers find their way here.
